DOCUMENTING SOURCES ACTIVITY

One of the goals of this class is to get students more comfortable with citing sources. To me, the trick is to learn how to use a style manual, like A Writer's Reference, as a guide. Towards that end, I set you the following task:

For each of the following items, I want you to write out the following by hand:

  • What would go in the parenthetical citation according to MLA rules?
  • What EXACTLY would the works cited entry look like, visually and content-wise?

You should first locate a copy of the text in question and then find the corresponding type of source in the MLA section of the Bedford. Then give the parenthetical citation and the works cited entry. Here are the sources you must use for this project:

  1. Nabokov's introduction to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (page 8).
  2. The first page of the chapter entitled "It's Alive, I'm Afraid" in The Monster Show.
  3. Anything from "Monster Theory (Seven Theses)."
  4. The IMDB entry on Cujo (see handout, one page).
  5. "Godzilla, The Most Famous Lizard of Them All" (see handout, two pages).
  6. David Edelstein's article on "Torture Porn" (see handout, four pages).
  7. William Freedman's essay on "The Raven" from a database (see handout, four pages)
