VIRTUAL PEER REVIEW (April 15, 2013)

Because I need to appear in court for the trial of the person who attempted to break into my house, we will not meet for class on April 15, 2013. Instead, you will perform a virtual peer review. This peer review will require you to upload the second draft of your paper by 8AM on Monday, April 15, 2013. You will then need to complete the peer review portion of the assignment by 11:59 PM on April 15, 2013. Those of you with computer access issues need to plan ahead to have access to a computer for both the 8AM upload and the peer review itself.

PART 1: UPLOAD YOUR PAPER (Deadline: 8AM April 15, 2013)

  • The paper must be uploaded to the "Research Paper: Virtual Class (Draft 2)" discussion board forum.
  • The paper must be copied and pasted into the text field AND attached as a file.
  • The paper must be in MS Word or Rich Text Format so that other people can read the file.
  • The subject heading for you post must include your specific topic. "My paper" or "A real monster" is not good enough.
  • The paper should be uploaded by 8AM so that both sections can have access to it during class time.

PART 2: PEER REVIEW

  • You are responsible for peer reviewing the paper that appears immediately above your post.
  • Download the linked file and type your comments into the file.
  • Save the file as "YourName_Comments_for_authorName" and make sure you save it as an MS Word file.
  • Use ALL-CAPS when typing in edits and type them next to errors or sections. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING IN THE DRAFT.
  • Try using the INSERT--> Comments option if you have a long comment.
  • As your read, include comments about the following in the body of the paper:
    • Mark typos, awkward sections, or sections that don't make sense.
    • Mark quotes indicating when they are missing signal phrase, have mispunctuated signal phrases, have incorrectly cited, or have forgotten to discuss quotes.
    • Mark confusing transitions.
    • Mark areas that are particularly good.
    • Mark areas that could be developed further and indicate how.
  • Type a note at the end discussing the following:
    • Does the paper make a specific claim beyond "X is a monster"? Stating "X is a monster because ...." is acceptable, but there needs to be a deeper discussion of what makes the monster a monster besides a statement that it did something horrible. It needs to relate to the historical context or social norms of a particular period.
    • Are enough sources used? Review the requirements, plus comment on if the writer is relying too much on one or two sources.
    • Comment on format, grammar, and quote mechanics.
    • Give concrete examples of what's working in the paper.
    • Give three pieces of advice for additions or revisions.
    • This note should use complete sentences and be at least half a page long double-spaced.
  • Post your response as a REPLY to the writer's original post. Make sure you attach the file correctly.

GRADING:

This assignment is worth fifty points. You'll be graded on the following:

  • Did you post your own paper by 8AM on the 15th?
  • Did you post your response by 11:59 PM on the 15th?
  • Did you use the proper file format for your paper and your response?
  • Did you have five pages of text in your draft?
  • Did you copy and paste AND attach the file?
  • Are your comments substantial?
