ONLINE ACTIVITY: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2017

Because I have jury duty on Friday, I will need to cancel class that (as I announced on Monday, 1/30). Instead, I want each of you to complete the online activity described below.

1. Read and mark Barbara Welter's "The Cult of True Womanhood: 1820-1860." Physical copies were distributed on Monday, but a digital copy is also available in the "Course Materials" section of Blackboard.

2. Write a two-page response that does the following:

• Write a short paragraph that outlines the topic (the issue she is writing about) and her thesis (what is the claim she is trying to prove). Then offer a personal response to the thesis: do you agree or disagree with her? Why?
• Discuss the kinds of evidence she uses to make her argument: what kind of evidence does she give? How does she present it? How do her interpretations of that evidence bolster her case? Is her use of evidence effective?
• Give two significant quotes (with page numbers) that you think are essential to understanding her point and explain why each quote is important.
• Ask a question about the essay that you would like someone else in class to answer.

3. Post your response to the discussion board under the "Cult of True Womanhood" thread. Copy and paste the text into the post AND attach the MS Word file.

4. Below, I have assigned each of you a partner. Read your partner's post and question. Hit "reply" and answer the question your partner posed with at least a paragraph.
