PAPER #1: IN-CLASS PREWRITING

For today's class, you were supposed to write two paragraphs, each outlining a possible topic for Paper #1. Before you start writing the paper, we are going to refine your topic a bit. Please complete the following worksheet. If you complete this in class, you will get five points. Folks who are absent do not get the five points.

Name:

Which of your two potential topics are you going to write your paper about?

Why did you pick that topic over the other one? If your response is a form of "it's easier," be specific: why will it be easier?

Write a description of yourself prior to the incident: in other words, what were you like prior to this incident? Be specific, and try to think of details or examples that will help people who don't know you to understand what you were like prior to the educational incident.

What was the incident? Describe what happened, and remember that not everyone went to your school or understands why some details are needed. Who or what was involved? What did you feel at the time?

What was the immediate impact (positive or negative) of the incident? Think of descriptive details that show a concrete impact on your behavior and your opinions about yourself, others, or the future at that time.

What are you like now because of the incident? Be specific: simply saying, "I was forever changed by this incident" is an empty cliche if you don't explain what specifically changed about yourself: what behavior changed? What choices did you make as a result of the incident? How was your self-image changed? What opportunities were gained or lost?

What concrete behaviors or attitudes can you point to today that are a result of the incident? How has impacted your life right now? What choices might you make to fix a negative attitude (if that's what you now feel)? What positive risks did you take as a result of a positive attitude?
