Racism in America: Understanding the History of Slavery and Its impact on American Culture

Montgomery County Community College is hosting a lecture series this semester: "Racism in America: Understanding the History of Slavery and Its impact on American Culture" as part of its annual Richard K. Bennett Distinguished Lectureship Series. Obviously, many of the topics have direct relevance to the topics in this course, and so I have incorporated them into our syllabus. You are required to attend three of the lectures:

• "Europeans, Native Americans and Africans: The Origins of Slavery and Race Prejudice in the Americas" by Aaron M. Shatzman, Ph.D., Dean of Social Science, Montgomery County Community College. • "The Construction of Race: Slavery, the Law, and Society" by Catherine Kerrison, Ph.D., Professor of History, Villanova University. • "Abandoned and Violated: African Americans in the Jim Crow South, 1877-1945" by Theresa Napson-Williams, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History, Montgomery County Community College. My expectations is that you will either attend the live event or watch the video posted soon after. Taking notes would be appropriate as we are going to discuss these lectures in class as part of the syllabus.
